Richard Lee Walker passed 04/15/2006 he would have been 15 on 06/23/2006. This is hard We only wanted to help him; Richard went up to Shriners Hospital to have a rod put in his back. He had severe kyphosis and would have been in a wheel chair soon. He was already in one part time he could only walk for a short time. The surgery was Wednesday and he did good (Richard was always good) and Thursday we spent the day with him and everything was moving as planed. We watched a movie during the day. Mom and I stayed with him at the hospital. Thursday night at about 11:30pm they said he had a bit of a fever and his heart rate was up. They got both down and at 2:30 am all looked good. I came down from the 7th floor at about 5:00 am and everything looked good. He was going to sit in a chair that day. At 7:30 his doctor came in and said he looked at the blood from last night and all looked fine. He asked Richard how he was had Richard told him fine and shook his hand (Richard was the hand shake police at church). At 10:30 he was in the Pediatric ICU of Doernbecher in critical condition. They got him stable there and again all was starting to look good. Then at about 11:45 Richard suffered a cardiac arrest, and had no pulse for 30 min. They got him stable again but said he may be brain dead. At midnight they started to wake him at 4:00 am they had had no response so they stopped all pain medication and anything that kept him sedated. 09:30 they tested for brain stem functions Richard failed. We talked to the doctors and together we decided to wait another 6 to 8 hours (the longest time of my life) then test again. We are looking at back surgery, ventilator and no pain control for over 12 hours. There was no change when they did the second test. Richard gotten Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, and as our doctor (he delivered Richard) explained to us they still do not know enough about A.R.D.S. Richard will be missed I just wish I had a little more time. I know that sounds silly but it hurts so much with out him. I know he is with the Father and is in pain no more. Richard used to say “Done Now” when he done with something, and we would tell no 5 more min. As he lay in bed his last day I held his hand and said Please don’t be done now 5 more min. OK! Life will never be the same. http://www.democratherald.com/articles/2006/04/18/news/obituaries/obit03.txt
